I spent the past week in Las Vegas for meetings but my last meeting before hitting the open road was something else entirely. I met with someone who holds Q clearance; the level associated with highly sensitive Department of Energy programs. The conversation was quiet, measured, and careful. I won’t go into details, but I left that meeting with more questions than answers and a few pieces of information that have been rattling around in my mind ever since.
But my final stop before hitting the open road was something else entirely.
I met with someone who holds Q clearance; the level associated with highly sensitive Department of Energy programs. The conversation was quiet, measured, and careful. I won’t go into details, but I left that meeting with more questions than answers and a few pieces of information that have been rattling around in my mind ever since.
And with that, I pointed the truck north and headed toward the desert.
Into Lincoln County
The drive into Lincoln County, Nevada is something every UFO enthusiast should experience at least once. Vast desert stretches endlessly under a sky so big it almost feels unreal. The silence out there isn’t just quiet; it’s profound.
Eventually you reach the famous stretch of road known as Extraterrestrial Highway.
For decades, this lonely road cutting through Nevada’s high desert has been tied to sightings of strange lights and mysterious aircraft believed by some to originate from the nearby Area 51 test facility.
Naturally, the first stop was the iconic ET Highway sign.
Like every other traveler who’s made the pilgrimage, I took the mandatory selfie.
Because if you drive hundreds of miles into the desert chasing UFO legends and don’t take that picture… did you even go?
The Mecca of UFO World
After the photo op, I continued down the highway until the tiny town of Rachel, Nevada appeared.
Population: roughly 23 people.
And sitting right in the middle of it all is the legendary Little A’Le’Inn.
If you’re into UFO lore, this place is sacred ground.
And it was everything I hoped it would be.
The staff were fantastic; especially one employee known simply as “Tough Guy.” He was personable, welcoming, and as it turns out, a very good cook. On my first night, the bartender mixed some excellent drinks while the diner slowly filled with an eclectic mix of travelers.
There were eccentric tourists chasing the UFO dream, weather-beaten locals with decades of desert stories written across their faces, and more than a few people who seemed to know a lot more than they were saying.
One local told me a story that caught my attention.
He claimed he once watched a black triangle craft racing across the sky while being pursued by an F-35 fighter jet.
According to him, the fighter was left in the dust.
The way he told it; with absolute calm certainty, made it hard not to believe he truly saw something extraordinary.
Life at the Little A’Le’Inn
Unfortunately the rooms in the diner building were fully booked, so I ended up staying in one of the small trailers on the property.
Not exactly luxury accommodations.
And I’ll admit… the desert can feel a little creepy at night when you’re sleeping in a trailer in the middle of nowhere.
But it added to the experience.
One of the highlights of the trip was meeting the iconic owner of the Inn, Ms. Pat. Anyone familiar with UFO documentaries has likely seen her before, and in person she is exactly how she appears on screen, kind, warm, and genuinely welcoming.
One employee summed it up perfectly:
“Ms. Pat takes care of us.”
And after spending time there, I believe it.
You’re alright with me, Pat.
Desert Breakfast & Desert Secrets
The next morning I walked over to the diner for coffee and breakfast.
And let me tell you; the bacon and eggs were fantastic, and the coffee somehow tasted even better in the middle of the Nevada desert.
I spent the morning talking with Tough Guy about what it’s like living in such a remote place. He had actually moved there from England, which only added to the surreal nature of the conversation.
Later I sat outside with a few locals enjoying the quiet desert air.
Everything was friendly and relaxed until I casually asked a simple question:
“Are there any gold mines around here?”
The change was immediate.
The mood shifted.
One local looked at me and said quietly:
“No one talks about it.”
The tone of his voice told me everything I needed to know.
That was not a question I should follow up on.
So I didn’t.
The Other Stops Along the Highway
Eventually it was time to keep moving.
Next stop was the infamous Black Mailbox, once rumored to be a meeting point for UFO watchers and late-night desert mysteries.
From there I visited the Alien Research Center, which is really just a gift shop.
Unfortunately the employee working there seemed far more interested in her phone than customers. Customer service was… minimal at best.
After that I made the long drive down a dusty dirt road toward the back gate of Area 51.
There isn’t much to see from the outside.
Just warning signs, distant mountains, and the sense that you are very far from civilization.
After a few minutes I noticed something interesting.
A jeep parked in the distance.
Inside were what locals call the “camo dudes.” Security personnel who monitor the perimeter of the base.
They were watching.
And that was my cue not to linger too long.
Something Strange in the Sky
While driving along the highway near Area 51, I saw something that still sticks with me.
A bright light streaked across the sky.
At first I thought it might be a shooting star.
But then something strange happened.
The object began pulsing with white light and curved slightly before disappearing.
I’ve seen plenty of shooting stars in my life.
I’ve never seen one change direction.
Maybe it was something completely explainable.
Or maybe not.
The Desert Changes You
The Nevada desert is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.
Vast.
Empty.
Almost otherworldly.
Standing out there under that enormous sky, you can’t help but feel that something important has happened in that desert… and perhaps still is.
There’s a feeling in your bones when you’re there.
Something hard to describe.
The trip reignited something in me; a spark to keep digging, keep asking questions, and keep searching for the truth about what might really be hidden in that desert and beyond.
The mission continues.
The hunt goes on.
Whether the camo dudes like it or not. 👽
